# Check a passport — Batteries

> Paste a passport URL or JSON. See whether the required data is there, what other laws already require, and what comes later. Free; not legal advice. Batteries.

Paste a Digital Product Passport URL or its JSON. The check reads the data against what EU law requires for that product type, and says what is not required yet.

Rule-based: the check names the EU act and article behind every finding, or says when the category is not yet checked. It explains what the law says for a product type matching the data you give, not your specific legal situation, and it is not legal advice.

## Battery passport obligation (EU) 2023/1542

Required from 18 Feb 2027 (Art. 77(1))

EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542

## Frequently asked questions

### When is a battery passport required?

From 18 February 2027 under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, Article 77(1), for EV traction batteries, LMT batteries and industrial batteries above 2 kWh. Portable, SLI and industrial batteries at or below 2 kWh are out of scope.

### What data points are checked?

The data points listed in Annex XIII of Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 for the selected battery type, present or missing per point. Conditional points (those that depend on battery characteristics such as BMS or rechargeability) are shown but not counted. Points whose obligation starts after 18 February 2027 — due diligence (18 Aug 2027), recycled content (18 Aug 2028 at the earliest; 18 Aug 2033 for LMT batteries), carbon footprint (date pending) — are listed separately and not counted.

### Why are some data points marked 'required by other laws'?

Fields such as the trade name, CE marking and removal information are required by other articles of the Battery Regulation (Arts. 38, 20 and 11). A passport may carry them, but they are not part of the passport duty in Art. 77.

### What are the technical checks?

The checker probes HTTP/2 availability, machine-readable JSON (EN 18216), the EN 18223 header keys, whether a linkset is offered, and whether a product identifier is present and follows a recognised scheme (ISO/IEC 15459 or equivalent for batteries, Art. 77(3)). These are standards checks, separate from the legal data-content checks.
